Michigan Blues members should beware of Social Security telephone scams

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network members are reminded not to give their Social Security numbers to unfamiliar or suspicious sources over the phone. Giving this information over the phone makes members vulnerable to identity theft.

More members say they're receiving calls from people who claim to represent the Blues and ask for their Social Security numbers. In most instances, the caller leaves a voice mail message after working hours asking members to call a toll–free number.

Members who return the call are asked to provide their names and Social Security numbers. The person answering the phone explains that the information is needed to safeguard the member's protected health information and then cites the Blues' position on protecting members' privacy.

If you receive one of these phone calls, please do not return it using the number the caller leaves.

Instead, call the Customer Service phone number listed on the back of your BCBSM or BCN ID card and ask to speak to the individual who contacted you.

Blues operators will ask you for your Social Security number only if you can't recall your Blues ID number, and we'll only call during regular working hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

BCBSM members who suspect health care fraud should call the BCBSM Anti–Fraud Hotline at 1-800-482-3787 or report fraud through this website.
