Extra help: Limited Income Subsidy

If you qualify for extra help in paying for your prescription drug coverage, you can receive help in paying for your monthly premium, and prescription drug copayments through the Limited Income Subsidy (LIS). If a member has already qualified for LIS, but believes incorrect payment levels are being applied, CMS has implemented a Best Available Evidence (BAE) Policy to update LIS status. You can visit the CMS website to learn how to update your status or call Member Services for more information at 1-877-241-2583 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. TTY users should call 1-800-579-0235. Group members can call the Member Services number on the back of your I.D. card.

People with limited incomes may qualify for extra help to pay for their prescription drug costs. If eligible, Medicare could pay for 75 percent of drug costs including monthly prescription drug premiums, annual deductibles, and coinsurance. Additionally, those who qualify will not be subject to the coverage gap or a late enrollment penalty. Many people are eligible for these savings and don't even know it.

For more information about this extra help, contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), 24 hours a day, seven days a week. TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048.

You can download the LIS Premium Summary charts for more information. The purpose of these documents is to inform potential enrollees of what their plan premium will be once they are eligible and receive the low-income subsidy.
