Nongroup Director Selection Council

Who is eligible to apply for a council seat?
You must be a BCBSM nongroup subscriber or member to apply. A nongroup subscriber is a person who is enrolled as an individual subscriber or has group conversion or Medicare Supplemental coverage.

What are the duties and qualifications of a council member?
There are three members on the Nongroup Director Selection Council (Council III). Council III appoints three directors who represent nongroup subscribers on the BCBSM board. They are to meet and maintain the same qualifications required of directors, primarily status as a nongroup subscriber with BCBSM.

The council is responsible for the solicitation of nongroup subscriber candidates for the board. The council uses any method deemed necessary for solicitation as long as it reasonably maximizes subscriber participation.

How are council members appointed and what is the term of office?
The BCBSM board of directors appoints council members to a two-year term.

How often does the council meet and where?
The council meets approximately four to six times per year, primarily in the BCBSM Service Center in Detroit. Council members must provide their own transportation.

Is there remuneration for serving?
Council members are paid a fee for each meeting attended. Members also receive reimbursement for any travel and meeting-related expenses.
