FAQ
What is Win by Losing?
Win by Losing is a weight-loss competition developed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in Aug. 2009. The program was designed to encourage group customers and their employees to take the first step toward adopting a healthier lifestyle. Teams from across the state compete for bragging rights while losing weight. As part of the Blues initiative to “go green,” all competition communications from us will be sent through weekly emails and updates on this website.
How do I register my team for Win by Losing?
During the registration period, click on the register button at the top of this page. Appoint a team representative to submit the following information:
Company name
Number of participating employees
Group starting weight total (weigh each individual, then submit the grand total weight for your team)
What registration information do I need to provide?
We ask that you provide us with the total number of participants on your team and the total team starting weight.
When I report my team's weekly weight loss, do I report total pounds lost for the week or a new team total weight?
Simply report the total pounds that your team has lost for the week. For example, 20 lbs.
Do we report individual or team results?
Please report weekly team results only.
What are the “divisions”?
The competitive divisions are determined by the number of employees participating in Win by Losing from each business, not the total number of employees at a business.
Your team will be placed into one of the following divisions:
10 or fewer participating employees
11 to 29 participating employees
30 to 59 participating employees
60+ participating employees
How are the winners determined?
Although we track your progress by the weekly total percentage of weight lost, the winners are determined by the total percentage of weight lost per team over the course of the competition.
What is the prize?
Besides your employees achieving a new, healthier lifestyle, we award each winning team per category the ultimate bragging rights plus an official Win by Losing trophy and T-shirts for all team participants.
Are Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network members only allowed to compete? What about other employees?
We welcome all of your employees to participate on your team. The Win by Losing toolkit features our exclusive weight-management program, which is designed for anyone to use.
But for your employees who do have health insurance through the Blues, we encourage them to register on Member Secured Services on bcbsm.com and MiBCN.com. There they can:
Complete a health assessment
Access the Balance® and Nourish® coaching programs for personalized diet and exercise tips
Receive discounts on groceries, workout attire, gym memberships and more though Healthy Blue XtrasSM
How often does Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan conduct a Win by Losing competition?
We hold two official competitions annually. Generally they are held from late February to late April and again from late August to mid-November. Check your email for official announcements from the Blues about Win by Losing.
If you do not currently receive emails, contact WinbyLosing@bcbsm.com to subscribe to our mailing list.
About Win by Losing
We believe in supporting healthy lifestyles. That's why we've created the Win by Losing weight loss challenge — a free competition in which you can lose weight while having fun and earning bragging rights.
This contest is all about eating well and exercising, and the Michigan Blues are looking forward to helping people take their first steps toward healthier lifestyles.
Win by Losing is available to all Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan group customers, whether you have one employee or 10,000. The contest has two rounds of competition every year — one that starts in February and runs until the end of April and another that runs from the end of August through November.
How to join
To register for the next round of competition, appoint a team representative to submit the following information:
Company name
Number of participating employees
Group starting weight total
Once the competition has started, the representative will be responsible for reporting the grand total amount of weight lost for that week by 5 p.m. every Friday. Each week the leader board will be updated on the website to reflect who has taken the lead in the respective categories.
A winner is selected in each category based on the total percentage of weight loss based on the number of participants and the number of pounds lost. Winning teams receive a trophy, Win by Losing T-shirts and ultimately, the coveted bragging rights.
